On Quay 5 in Taichung Harbor, about US$1 billion worth of ‘kit’ sits, quietly waiting. These are 8MW SG8.0-167 turbines waiting to be assembled and shipped out to wpd’s 640MW Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm. They were never meant to be hanging out that long. SGRE technicians have to manipulate the ball bearings in the nacelles every few days to prevent them from ‘settling’. Every two weeks, power is fed into the nacelles so everything can run. Moisture has to be kept from the tower sections. The ashy, gritty dust from Taichung’s coal-fired power plants has to be powerwashed from the pristine white surface of all the components.
